What Ourlads NFL Scouting Services said about JOHN CARLSON: Notre Dame, 6051 251 4.89. Two-and-a-half year starter that has good receiving skills. Soft hands that can pluck the ball away from his body. Does a good job of adjusting to the flight of the ball. Holds the ball on contact. Athletic after catch. Will fight for extra yards. Can break tackles. Good first step quickness off the ball. Escapes holdup at the line of scrimmage. Many times he gets a free release. Doesn’t get knocked out of a pattern. Will use an arm over release at times. Good body control in his patterns. Fluid, not stiff or mechanical in movement. Can get open versus man and zone. Has a feel for the underneath passing game. Can get into the void behind the linebackers and between the safeties in cover two. Wall off position type blocker that keeps his base and balance and stays on his feet. Secures the point. Keeps his knees bent and has good footwork. Long arms to control defender. Slender lower body hinders snap and power as an inline blocker. Works to finish blocks. Has been overpowered and leveraged back if he doesn’t bend. Last year’s first round Chicago pick, Greg Olson, transferred from Notre Dame because of Carlson’s talent. Had 40 catches, 372 yards, and 3 touchdowns. OSR:10/16. Third/fourth round. (A-34 1/4, H-10 1/8, BP-20, VJ-30.5).
