What Ourlads NFL Scouting Services said about TYRON SMITH: Southern Cal, 6050 307 4.95. Junior entry. Two-year starter with extra long arms and catcher mitt hands. Plays in a pro style offense and drives the defender the way he wants to go. Good zone blocker. Seals the play side with technique and athletic ability. Good lateral range to slide his feet and adjust to block a speed rusher. Played right tackle at USC but has left tackle feet and athletic ability. Will be drafted as a left tackle. He is equally skilled and effective pass or run blocking. A knee bender with leg drive and hip snap. Has the strength, shock, control, and drive to dominate. Easy light feet and finish ability. Locks on when run blocking and works to finish. Has functional play strength and balance. Can play in space. A flexible athlete who will sustain his blocks and anchor versus power. Will be 20-years old when drafted. An ascending skill set similar to the Jets’ D’Brickashaw Ferguson. What Ourlads' NFL Scouting Services said about SHAUN
CODY: Southern Cal, 6040 293 5.06. Intelligent and aware player. Good interior
instincts to feel and read play. Quick to read and react and get in on plays.
Sudden initial quickness to get into and off of blocks. Outstanding lateral
movement to slide and clear his feet in traffic. Plays under his pads with good
knee bend and leverage. Can be explosive when he uncoils. Flashes ability to
dominate his opponent. Can lock out and control the blocker with his hands,
press off, shed, and get in on tackle. Outstanding use of his hands. Relentless
to the ball with his intensity. Very good range, speed, and takes good angles in
pursuit. Will sacrifice his body to make a tackle. As a tackler he is effective,
explosive and a wrap up technician. Has an explosive power rush with good
anticipation and take off. Pushes the pocket and is especially effective on
inside stunts. When on an edge he can speed rush and has a burst to run to the
corner and close off blocks. Technique conscious player who uses his hand
strength and quick hands to execute a pass rush or defend the run. Versatile
enough to play inside or outside in a 4/ 3 or 3/4 defensive scheme. Could be
stronger at the point of attack at times and grab grass to create a pile. Will
lose his knee bend and get high and rolled out at times. A high motor great
effort player who will be an asset to any team that drafts him. Plays
disciplined within defensive scheme. A disruptive, relentless player with good
foot mobility and athletic ability. Usually draws two or three blockers per
play, but works to the quarterback until the whistle. Effective on twist stunts
and plays good on his feet. Makes a lot of “hustle” plays. Plays hard every
down. (Originally drafted by Detroit)

What Ourlads NFL Scouting Services said about TROY POLAMALU: Southern Cal, 5102 206 4.40. A shorter than ideal strong safety with a stocky build. Thick legged. Has very good strength. Three year starter. Very productive throughout his career — had an injury plagued senior year — bothered much of the season with an ankle sprain. Dynamic “in the box” player with quick reactions and a very physical style — plays like an extra linebacker. Explosive tackler. Wraps and drives through. Outstanding in pursuit — attacks with tremendous desire — has a great closing burst — will chase plays from the middle of the field and leap into a tackle at the sideline. Jumps into piles. Plays with good knee bend. Quick footed. Very good blitzer who times his charge well. Not a dynamic coverage safety, but he runs well and is quick out of his pedal. Reacts well to plays in front of him — punishes receivers after the catch. Excellent special teams player with kick blocking ability. Durability is a concern due to his size and the disregard for his body that he displays on the field. Quality prospect.

What Ourlads NFL Scouting Services said about MARK SANCHEZ: Southern Cal, 6021 227 4.93. Junior entry. Sixteen game starter. Right handed and team captain. Demonstrates the physical talent and ability to succeed on the next level. Rhythm type passer that keeps his eyes down the field. Improved throughout the year. Plays in a pro style offense under center and in the shotgun. Good pocket presence. Throws well on the run. Ball come out high. Strong and accurate arm. Throws the whole package - slants, crossers, skinny post, swings, check down, and screen passes. Good anticipation and timing in the 3 and 5 step drop pattern. Does a good job of attacking the seams in three deep coverage. The skinny post and seam routes are the only patterns you can observe him throwing the ball through a tight window. Generally his receivers are wide open. The Pac-10 plays more press coverage than other conferences, yet he keeps his poise. Can lay the ball over the linebackers. Accurate throwing to a spot. Can step up and lead his teammates. Best games were against the best opponents. Has a natural feel in the passing game. Good athlete that is a student of the game. Good deceiver. 2008 statistics: 3207 yards, 34 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, 65.9 percent. Ball velocity 57 mph. OSR:4/21. First round. (A-33 1/2, H-10 1/2, SS-4.21, VJ-32 1/2).

What Ourlads' NFL Scouting Services said about BRIAN CUSHING: Southern Cal, 6027 243 4.65. Three-year starter. Also started four games as a true freshman in 2005. Talented, instinctive three down linebacker that is injury prone. Missed time as a high school senior with an ankle sprain. Dislocated his shoulder and had surgery spring of his sophomore year at USC. Missed the spring of 2007 with a strained hamstring. Had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee after spring practice. Sprained his left ankle and missed Nebraska and Washington State games, sprained his left ankle again and missed three games. That being said, he is very active and aware in the passing game by getting in the throwing lane. Flashes ability as an edge pass rusher. Talented, aggressive, and competitive player. Shows good explosion. Attacks blocker with good leverage and knee bend but is inconsistent leading with his hands. Quick in initial reactions and filling gaps. Gets downhill in a hurry and plays the backside cutback well. Takes good angles in pursuit and shows speed to close. Can get caught on the wrong side of a block. Good ability to get through the wash and find the ball. Shows some pass rush skills with a burst to close. Does a good job playing over a tight end with a solid jam and the ability to work through a zone block. Jams tight end well off the line and has the speed to cover man to man. Has some trouble with backs in space, but shows good zone awareness and a good break on the ball. Takes good drops with good range in coverage. Overall a solid prospect with good size, speed, and a high motor. Would make a solid Sam linebacker in a 4-3 scheme. OSR:4/34. First round. (A-32 1/2, H-10, BP-30, SS-4.22).

What Ourlads NFL Scouting Services said about REY MAUALUGA: Southern Cal, 6016 249 4.85. Three-year starter. An explosive impact hitter at the point of attack. Good change of direction. Downhill player that fills the running lanes with quick initial reactions. Has a burst in pursuit. Built like former Eagle linebacker, Jeremiah Trotter. Thick lower body with a long torso. Good balance. Has the agility to step over blockers and work through traffic. Can turn and run. Has a burst to close on the ball carrier. Blows up running back blocker when he runs through on a blitz. Generally plays with a good knee bend. Bottom line is that he is powerful, fast, quick, and can cover the pass. Very average instincts. Must see it rather than feel the play. Undisciplined at times, both on and off the field. Will miss tackles because he is out of control and doesn’t break down. Plays with a good base and leverage. Fits the hole well and is a physical tackler who punishes the ball carrier. Powerful attacking blockers but gets tied up too much. Spends too much time working through a block and lacks a great shed technique. Has the explosiveness to develop in this area. Normally takes good angles in pursuit. A top prospect that needs to be more consistent. At times he shows an extreme amount of energy and is a high motor player. Has the tools to work with and should be a solid Mike. Strained a right hamstring on first 40 of the Combine. Shorter arms than ideal. Big hands. Better in a confined area than in space. Had 273 tackles, 22 1/2 tackles for loss, 9 sacks, and 5 interceptions. First/ second round. (A-31 3/4, H-10, BP-23, SS-DNP).

Active and productive. An intense player with good athletic ability. Will compete and shows good toughness. Inconsistent in his run support and tackling. He is willing to force the run but gets hung up on the blocker at times. Gets in trouble if he doesn’t wrap up. In man coverage has the flexibility to make the turns and accelerate down the field. Plays with awareness and anticipation in zone coverage. He has the physical tools to start at the next level. OSR:19/32. BTR:left 4.38, right 4.74. Third/fourth round. Can make the tough catch and catch the ball outside his frame. Concentrates on ball in a crowd. Will compete. Understands and recognizes coverages. Will sit down in a void area. Experience as a wing and an H-back. Catches the ball in his soft hands. Can take a hit. Question concentration at times coming off the ball late. Inconsistent on release. Can get jammed. Downhill ability with good fits to the hole and good instincts. Locates the ball well with good pursuit angles. Throws his body around and is aggressive taking on blocks. Could work better with his hands, but is explosive on contact. Has pass rush skills. Works well versus a tight end with good second effort. Gets good leverage when playing off a block. For the most part is solid in coverage in both man and zone. Shows the ability to cover a tight end up the seam and demonstrates good zone awareness. Needs to see the ball and receiver better. At times gets locked on a receiver in a zone and does not react to the throw. In general, is very active in coverage and shows good range. Works to finish play. High motor player with a nose for the ball. Solid every down prospect that projects as a first day pick. Member of the NFL good DNA club with father Clay Sr. and uncle Bruce Matthews, long time durable league standouts. Will contribute on special teams. Hard worker. Will flash an explosive punch at times. Will take bad angles to cut off linebackers on the second level. Lacks first step initial quickness. Comes up, not out on snap. Has the size and athletic ability to start, but is in dire need of technique work and a clinic on how you play the game. Will need reps in any offensive scheme. OSR:28/42. Third/ fourth round. Aggressive and competitive. Played left tackle for the Trojans but may project to the right side in the NFL. An average athlete that is always a little behind his opponents movement. Havili, Stanley Southern Cal 6002 227 4.70
Four-year starter who is versatile and productive. The true fullback position on most NFL teams is going by the wayside with leather helmets and button under crotch jerseys. Ball clubs are using tight ends, defensive linemen, or linebackers as lead blockers. Every year there is at least one true short-necked fullback that grew into playing the position. This year it is Havili. He is the total package of good blocking skills, hands to catch all the pass routes, and productivity as a runner. The former running back brings good running skills to the table along with the above mentioned attributes. He has good vision, feet, strength, and power between the tackles and in short yardage situations. Finishes his runs with effort and authority. A good athlete who flashes a burst around the corner. Not easy to tackle in the open field on screen passes. Can kick out or seal the edge force defender. A willing lead blocker who is explosive. Physical in his overall play. Has an injury history. Has been nicked up all four years at USC. For complete report see Ourlads Guide to the NFL Draft.
