Draft Rewind 2005 - Logan Mankins - New England Patriots

What Ourlads NFL Scouting Services said about LOGAN MANKINS: Fresno State, 6041 307 5.14. Three-year starter. Physical player. Former walk-on. Played left tackle, projects to an offensive guard. Aggressive on down blocks. Keeps a good base. Ties up linebackers on second level. Needs work on his angles to second level. The team runs behind him. Good use of hands. Keeps them inside defender’s frame. Can dominate opponent at times. Maintains contact and finishes play. Can bend his knees and play low. Position wall off in pass protection. Aggressive. Plays on his feet. Good balance. Plays with leverage. Struggled in the Senior Bowl with the move from tackle to guard. Lunged and was a waist bender in drills. Was not physical and was beaten off the edge when he played tackle in drills. When the defender got the jump on him, he turned it down. Anchor was below average. Was not agile and didn’t react well to quick defenders. Stopped on contact during pulls. Played left guard in East/West game and was aggressive in the run game. Stayed engaged. Demonstrated good mirror and slide. Was voted Fresno State’s most valuable player. Missed 2003 with a torn right ACL. Should be a solid player, but the Senior Bowl left questions. Late second or third round choice.

An I-formation back who is a straight ahead north/south runner who can pick his way through traffic. Drives legs on contact. Generally gets what’s blocked. Combines different running styles to gain yards. A tough kid who can break tackles. Keeps his shoulders square to the line of scrimmage and runs to daylight. A natural hand catcher who is rarely used in that role. 2010 stats: 1147 yds, 4.6 ypc, 15 TDs, 11 receptions for 61 yds. OSR:20/36. Fourth/fifth round. (A-31 7/8, H-9 1/4, BP-18, SS-4.21).

A good athlete who can lock out and shock a defender in pass protection. Has a 32-inch vertical jump. Has quickness and functional strength. Draft Rewind 2010 - Rob Gronkowski - New England Patriots

What Ourlads NFL Scouting Services said about ROB GRONKOWSKI: Arizona, 6062 264 4.70. Two-year starter. Did not play in the 2009 season after back surgery for a herniated disc. Big red zone target with long arms. Productive inline blocker that stayed on his feet and worked low to high. Good initial contact to secure the point. He did it all - wall off, drive block, down block, double team, angle cut, stick and stay. Excellent arm length to control and tie up defender. Soft hands with the ability to make the tough catch. Athletic after catch. Determined runner. Fights for extra yards. Breaks tackles. Secures the ball after catch. Has the ability to quick set in pass protection. Shows above average ability to change direction and redirect. Intense and aggressive in pass protection. Comes off hard on release. Did not run a variety of patterns in their offense. Draft Rewind 2004 - Vince Wilfork - New England Patriots

What Ourlads NFL Scouting Services said about VINCE WILFORK: Miami, 6012 325 5.10. Junior eligible. Productive rotation player early in his career. Dynamic first year starter in ’03. Not a classic specimen. Shorter than ideal — has a big belly. Thick-legged with a wide upper body and excellent strength. Explosive off the ball. Has a quick first step and is powerful into blocks. Does a good job of controlling his man, fighting the double team, and clogging the middle. Holds the point well. Usually plays low. Will overextend and go to the ground a little too much. Separates and sheds well, but he can be late to locate, as he sometimes gets too focused on the blocker and doesn’t look for the ball. Forceful tackler — can bring down a runner on the spot. Limited range type player — runs well for his size but is not an all-out pursuit player. Solid inside pass rusher with a fine combination of strength and aggressive moves. Uses his hands well. Keeps his feet active. Short strider with a strong closing burst. Quality prospect — needs to control his weight.

Three-year starter that played with his hand down but has the ability to play standing up over a tight end (Sam linebacker). Long arms and big hands. Good initial quickness from his stance to the opponent. Everything about this player is sudden - lateral quickness, foot quickness, and hand quickness. Can accelerate off a block and burst to the quarterback. Strong effort to rush the quarterback. Flexible enough to turn the corner low and flatten the edge. Then he accelerates to the ball. Makes plays once he gets up the field. Has the ability to go to a second move. Hands up in the pass rush. Consistent and tenacious pass rush effort every down. Will contribute on special teams coverage. Had 152 tackles, 34 for loss, 19 1/2 sacks, and 5 forced fumbles in his career. Did not work out at the Combine because of shoulder surgery. Third/fourth round. (A-33 3/4, H-10 3/8, BP-DNP, 10-DNP).

What Ourlads NFL Scouting Services said about BRANDON SPIKES: Florida, 6027 249 5.00. Three-year starter with good instincts and the tools to star on Sunday. Collision tackler that is always around the ball. Opponent’s game plan for him is to try and wall him off and cut him. Had four interceptions, returning two for touchdowns in 2008. Runs through ball carrier when tackling. Active in both the run game and pass coverage. Can run with backs in man to man coverage. Quick to break up on the ball in front of him. Scrapes quickly to the outside and cuts off the backs’ angles. Works his way through traffic and can hold his ground on plays directly at him. Tough, aggressive, and competitive. Plays with knee bend and has the quickness to shuffle and make plays parallel to the line of scrimmage. Strong enough to tackle the ball carrier and the blocker. Productive with 307 tackles over the past three years. Football smart with good work ethic and a passion for the game. Long arms and big hands to control the blockers. His ability to read and react quickly makes up for his lack of track speed. Has had several tipped passes in his career because of his savvy to get into the throwing lane. A strong vocal leader. Did not work out at the Combine. First round. (A- 33 3/8, H-10, BP-DNP, SS-DNP).

Angular tackle with inconsistent knee bend. Bit of a mauler. Plays in a spread offense. Played left tackle, but projects to right side because of average foot quickness. Struggles to recover in pass protection. Developmental prospect with measurables and some pro physical skills. Came to Houston as a tight end. Marginal lateral quickness. Everything is taught. Plays high and generally without knee bend. Fringe agility and balance. Will need to learn to drive block. Played well in the East-West game. Has had a back injury in the past and missed the 2006 season. Seventh round. (A-33 1/4, H-10 5/8, BP-32, 10-1.76).

Smith, Lee Marshall 6057 266 5.01
Three-year starter who is a run blocking tight end with some short area receiving skills. Catches the ball well in his soft hands. His likely role on the next level will be as an inline blocker in short yardage and running downs. Has the ability and size to dive block one on one. Functional strength. Solid combo blocker. Productive and aggressive. Will position and screen off defender. Has enough foot quickness to execute a power reach block and turn the outside shoulder of the linebacker upfield. Plays with good power base and balance. A short area receiver with the ability to adjust to an off target pass. Can catch the ball in a crowd. Not a deep threat. A competitor who runs hard after catch. For complete report see Ourlads Guide to the NFL Draft.

Marcus Cannon, New England Patriots, 138th Pick, 5th Round, 2011 NFL Draft

Cannon, Marcus TCU 6053 358 5.30
Three-year starter. A huge, block out the sun, athletic man with long arms and natural strength. Occupies target. Can mirror and slide in pass protection. Tendency to play high. Not a natural knee bender. Can be beat inside on a quick slant move. A mauler in the run game. Needs technique and fundamental work. Plays both in a preset pass stance or a three point stance. Plays with a good base. Will waist bend at times in pass protection instead of moving his feet. Gets to the second level in the run game and can wall off backside linebackers. Sometimes will take bad angles. Gets push on down blocks. Power packed legs and butt. Flashes a six-inch punch and effective use of hands at times. Marginal initial quickness. Maintains his balance when sliding with his man. Has some interesting tools. Plays left tackle. Will get a shot at right tackle, but may be moved inside. Could finish his blocks better. For complete report see Ourlads Guide to the NFL Draft.

Thursday, June 30, 2011

Ryan Mallett, New England Patriots, 74th Pick, 3rd Round, 2011 NFL Draft

Mallett, Ryan Arkansas 6067 253 5.37
Junior entry. Two-year starter. Transfer from the University of Michigan. A big man with a big arm. Can make all the NFL caliber passes. Can throw the fade pattern with accuracy and touch. Runs a combination pro and spread offensive scheme. Takes ball in shotgun under center. Has the arm strength to take advantage of coverage breakdowns. The ball doesn’t stay in the air long. Good velocity. Plays in a complex offensive system. Has the ability to manage the offense and handle adjustments. Can drive the ball down the field and hit the receivers on routes with few adjustments. Struggles to reset body with balance to make a quick and accurate throw. Big and strong, straight line runner. Must set his feet to throw accurately. Pressure in the pocket causes him problems. Needs a clean pocket to succeed. Has a tendency to throw low if under duress. Struggles to avoid the rush. There are question marks on his intangibles of work habits and attitude and lack of consistency at times. In the Sugar Bowl he threw skinny post and seam routes as good as a quarterback can place the ball and they were dropped by inconsistent receivers. For complete report see Ourlads Guide to the NFL Draft.

Stevan Ridley, New England Patriots, 73rd Pick, 3rd Round, 2011 NFL Draft

Ridley, Stevan LSU 5112 225 4.64

Not always a creative runner, but runs hard. Picks up his feet and can step through tackles. Downhill with zone cut back vision. Lowers his shoulder and will hit and spin off the tackler. Can slip tacklers or make a defender miss in space. Skips through the line and can make a linebacker grab for air. Explosive into the hole at times and flashes a quick cut and burst up the field. Combines different running styles to gain yards. A tough kid who can break tackles. Keeps his shoulders square to the line of scrimmage and runs to daylight. A natural hand catcher who is rarely used in that role. For complete report see Ourlads Guide to the NFL Draft.

Friday, June 24, 2011

Shane Vereen, New England Patriots, 56th Pick, 2nd Round, 2011 NFL Draft

Vereen, Shane California 5102 210 4.50
Junior entry. Started 19 games over three years. Plays in a
multiple set offensive scheme. Good vision and power. In a
rotation with other backs to stay fresh. Works his way through
traffic as a bender/weaver type runner. Runs the ball at times
with a direct snap in Wildcat offense. Good contact balance.
Lacked explosiveness in the Oregon game. Looked like he signed a non-aggression pact as a blocker in pass protection. A toe cutter when he does block. A natural pass receiver with 74 catches in his career. Good adjust to a high or off target pass. Runs north and south and leaks through to the second level. Question ball security at times. Has a chance to make a team as a third down back if he improves his willingness to block. For complete report see Ourlads Guide to the NFL Draft.
