Ourlads Combine Rankings

For each position below, we have ranked the players listed by a special Ourlads’ formula we call OSR (Ourlads Statistical Rating). Each workout field is weighted to the importance of the position – i.e.: for quarterbacks – height, the short shuttle, 3 cone drill, and Wonderlic test are the most important. Broad jump, vertical jump, 40-yard dash, and 20-yard dash are also important, but not as important as the first four mentioned. For defensive linemen – emphasis is put on the 10-yard dash (shows first step explosion), short shuttle (shows change of direction quickness), and bench press (for upper body strength), then the height, weight, and speed, etc. These are all tools for evaluation, but nothing takes the place of game day productivity. Some athletes are listed at two positions.

Phil Hepler, our top research and statistical analysis scout, provides our readers with our positional statistical rating that we include in the player reports. Phil's complete formula, however, will remain sealed along with Colonel Sanders' fried chicken recipe.

East-West Shrine Game Tight Ends

Dennis Pitta (BYU) – 6041, 245, big hands 10 1/8”. Red zone target. Productive receiver with dependable and strong hands. Good week of practice. Riar Geer (Colorado) – 6024, 252, big hands 10”. Occupies outside linebacker as a blocker. Works to finish. Good route runner. Sets down in cavity of zone and turns numbers to quarterback. Nathan Overbay (Eastern Washington) – 6043, 262. Caught the ball well during the week. Needs work on his routes. Catches the ball in a crowd. Biggest weakness is blocking. Needs more strength. Five tight ends lined up one time or another during the week for the East team. Andrew Quarless (Penn State) – 6042, 248, long arms 33 ¾” and big hands 10”. Looks the part physically. Many of the suspicions at Penn State came to the surface during the week of practice in Orlando. It always appeared that he gave a perfunctory effort during the game and the week of preparation. Inconsistent focus, play speed, and effort. Performed well at times making a one-handed catch and a leaping two handed game winning touchdown snatch on a seam route. At other times, he would cradle or body catch a ball and just go through the motions in his route running. Boom or bust draft choice. Nate Byham (Pittsburgh) – 6036, 268, long arms 33 3/8”, hands 10”. Snatched ball in practice. Ali Villanueva (Army) – 6090, 277, arms 33 ½”, hands 10 1/8”. Tall red zone target. Fullback/tight end combination.Used as an H-back where he lines up at a variety of positions. Clay Harbor (Missouri State) – 6030, 240. Was a late add, but made the most of his time running good routes and catching the ball in his hands. Can separate versus linebackers. A poor man’s Dallas Clark. Has the speed to run down the middle against Cover 2.

East-West Shrine Game Wide Receivers

Alric Arnett (West Virginia) – 6013, 183. Good week of practice and route running in the game. Drives the corners off and drives back to the ball. Goes up for the ball at the high point. Will reach and extend for the ball outside his frame. Plucks the ball. Freddie Barnes (Bowling Green) – 6001, 212. Productive in practice and the game snatching the ball with his strong hands. If the ball is close, he catches it. Can find the void in zone coverage. Competitive. Fringe speed. Struggles to separate in man to man coverage. Blair White (Michigan State) – 6020, 205. A big receiver that started off the week of practice slowly, cradling the ball. Every day he got better plucking the ball in his hands. Catches the ball on his fingertips and in his strong hands. Has the courage to go across the middle, make the play and take a hit. Emmanuel Sanders (SMU) – 5105, 182. Good week of practice. Size is a major concern. Runs crisp and sharp routes. Quick in and out breaks. Hand catcher. David Reed (Utah) – 6002, 188. Demonstrated good reliable strong hands in practice but did not play in the game after suffering a groin injury. Verran Tucker (California) – 6013, 194. Left practice with a hamstring pull. Ryan Moya (UCLA) – 6011, 233. H-back and fullback with good hands. More of a receiver than an inside blocker.

East-West Shrine Game Running Backs

Javarris James (Miami) – 6000, 213. Downhill one cut zone runner. Good running skills and vision. Caught the ball well in practice. Better than average blocker in the passing game. Good awareness. Andre Dixon (Connecticut) – 6003, 200, Andre Anderson (Tulane) – 5105, 205, Dimitri Nance (Arizona State) – 5093, 224, Keith Toston (Oklahoma State) – 5115, 210, and Pat Paschall (North Dakota State) – 5114, 206 are all similar type running backs that you could put in a bag and shake them up and pull out a camp type running back. All five flashed vision and cutting ability in practice. Nance is thicker in his lower body, but none is a consistent tackle breaker. Competitively, none did anything special to separate them from each other.

East-West Shrine Game Quarterbacks

Mike Kafka (Northwestern) – 6027, 216. Only started one year, but was impressive in practice and the game with his football intelligence and poise. A playmaker that has good touch and anticipation. Can scramble for positive yards. Steps up into the pocket and steps into his passes. Late round, developmental project. John Skelton (Fordham) – 6050, 244. Big strong armed drop back passer that showed his fast ball during the week. A developmental type with raw skills and footwork. Touch is inconsistent on short and intermediate passes. There was also some question as to whether football will be his main priority. Daryll Clark (Penn State) – 6017, 238. Good athlete that throws well on the run. Projects to a running back similar to San Francisco’s Michael Robinson. Max Hall (BYU) – 6002, 202. Up and down week of practice but is generally accurate on short and medium routes. Good anticipation on seam routes. Shorter than ideal. Smart and learns quickly. Struggled throwing the ball in the rain. Matt Nichols (Eastern Washington) – 6016, 220. Good arm strength. Can buy time with his feet to extend the play. Has a chance to develop with borderline measurables and skills. Todd Reesing (Kansas) – 5100, 188. Good leader and anticipation, elusive when he pulls the ball down. Below average arm strength and size. Canadian league candidate
